light on facts (3/9/22)

I know where facts come from… factories, of course, as did this one… fact!

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Space, as in the one beginning with a capital ‘S’, is BIG… oh yes it is, no pantomime argument about it, it’s BIG, with a ‘B’-‘I’-‘G’, and as such measuring distance can get a bit tedious as the numbers just get bigger and bigger and bigger until, basically, one runs out of zeroes, or patience, hence the ‘light-year’, being the distance light travels in one single Earth year, a light year being equivalent to about 6 trillion miles (9 trillion km), give or take, we won’t quibble over inches, this being a 6 followed by 12 zeros… wtf!… how can anywhere be that far?… as a consequence of this, light take ages to reach us, so don’t hold your breath, that’s all I can say, even light from our very own sun take 8.3 minutes (or light minutes if you’re being picky), which is about 500 light seconds (though I don’t know how many dark seconds that makes, or even heavy seconds), and if you insist on wanting it in metres, though I’ve no idea why, it’s 150.4 billion, again, give or take, which is, ta-daaa, about 0.00001585 light years from the sun, as such we only ever see the sun in the past, as in 8.3 minutes ago, and that’s with light travelling at a speed of about 186,000 miles (300,000km) per second, kooky, hey… but I’m sure you knew all that, and what did you expect, it’s 93 million miles away, although yes, it does look closer, doesn’t it, weird, and there goes another 8.3 minutes…
