little pig and pink dog, 2nd April 2017

in a box from 1983 I found some books from 1933 neatly padded in newspaper from 1978…. ’tis a veritable time capsule……… the box had originally held bulbs, a simple brown box ink stamped which is how I gleaned a date for it as boxes in themselves rarely usually give up their age so easily…… the newspaper was from a 1978 copy of the Radio Times which was back then on newsprint rather than the glossy, flimsiness it’s become…… one page even showed what was on the radio that day, ah those halcyon days…… not!….. February 1978 to be more precise and if you’re being really picky the 23rd…. …. incidentally that days ‘Listen with Mother’ was “Little pig and pink dog”, I’m now mercilessly intrigued to hear it some time……. where were you in 1978?…… if you even existed of course…… I did, I was there……….. as for the books I most definitely wasn’t there when they were published way back in the when of 1933……… but what are they? I thought you’d never ask……… The British Encyclopedia Illustrated in ten hardbound volumes…. ten!….. what a find and now they’re mine, a new chapter of their history……… to think not even the second world war had happened at the time they were compiled and I’ve already lost hours to them sitting on the floor skipping from reference to reference discovering a world not mine but familiar in many ways………. I don’t care what anyone says, the Internet can’t hold a candle to the pure unadulterated pleasure of stepping-stone through them, one thing leads to another and another and another………
